Congressman Steven Horsford had a ten-year affair with an intern that was 15 years his junior, and then he used his lobbyist firm money to cover up the affair. In less than 24 hours, we found a female who voted Democrat, who was willing to record a digital ad attacking Horsford for his infidelity. We recorded the shoot at the principal of the firm’s house, produced the ad, and within 48 hours the Jim Marchant campaign had the digital ad up on television. The entire shoot and creation of the ad only cost $500.
The affair digital ad caused Horsford to start attacking the Jim Marchant campaign because voters in Nevada’s 4th Congressional district, especially female voters, were speaking out against Horsford’s affair. The affair digital ad started to move numbers, and Horsford knew Jim Marchant was catching up to him in the polls. This shoestring digital ad is what began to move the Jim Marchant campaign into striking distance of victory.
Marchant was polling in the low 20s, twenty points behind Horsford, and he ended up only a few points behind in the final results despite being outspent 3 to 1. Marchant received 30,000 more votes than any other Republican to ever run in that Congressional district.
